Martlets Fall to Longmeadow

The Martlets rushed out of classes to catch the bus for a Monday afternoon trip across state lines to play the Longmeadow Lancers. Westminster was missing two key players because of injury and, unfortunately, some equipment issues left the Martlets even more shorthanded. As has been the story of the season, the Martlets didn’t make excuses and competed hard for all four quarters, but ultimately ran out of proverbial gas at the end of the game and couldn’t contain the Lancers’ fourth quarter offensive. The Lancers scored two goals to start the game, but Westminster battled back, scoring four straight off several fast breaks sparked by faceoff wins from Ty Lambert ‘26 and Ty Ungerman ‘26. Longmeadow scored the next three, bringing the score to 6-5 before the Martlets tied it up at the end of the third. The squads traded goals at the start of the fourth before Longmeadow capitalized on Westminster’s fatigue and some substitution issues. The Martlets competed until the final whistle, putting together some scoring chances that were stymied by the Lancers’ skilled goalie. Matt Gregorski ‘27 had his best game of the season, netting two goals, and the defensive unit played tough all day with Hudson Black ‘27 and Bennett Varao ‘27 stepping up in key situations in their most competitive action of the season. The referees commented at the end of the game that the Martlets were among the hardest playing and most respectful teams they’ve encountered this year. While there are many things to clean up at Tuesday’s practice, Westminster is proud of the team’s consistent effort, improvement, and sportsmanship.v
