Martlets Fall to Bearcats

On a glorious day to head into Bearcat country in northwest Connecticut, the Martlets played a gritty, competitive round against the perennial powerhouse Hotchkiss squad.  Although the Black and Gold fell short of its goal for a team victory, each match featured skilled performances from both teams in exciting back and forth action.  From this coach’s vantage point, it’s exciting to witness the development and growth of players in the Founders League at this point in the season, potentially setting up for a thrilling Founders League Championship in several weeks.  #1 Cindion Huang ‘25 would need her most formidable self to stay in her competitive match, starting slowly and falling to three down after four holes.  Huang, however, is never one to shy away from a challenge as she started her charge with precision shots and key putts, all high on the grit monitor.  Down by one on the final and challenging par 5 ninth, Huang would craft in succession several beautiful shots en route to a par and an impressive tie with her opponent.  Lucy Wainwright’s ‘25 round would be a different story as she settled into her game and never looked back, winning three up with two to go.  Wainwright ‘25 has worked hard and intentionally in practice to yield her high-level game, and she has lots of confidence in her process as was evident today all over the course.  Her score of 40 would be the team’s low score of the day.  Taylor Horgan ‘24 would again lean on her colossal and consistent drives but struggle a bit around the greens to get up and down.  She would again show her own competitive focus and force her opponent to raise her game before falling 2 down with one to play.  After a strong afternoon on the range yesterday, Ella Ungermann ‘24 would struggle to find her usual consistency, going down by 5 before she steadied herself and tied her opponent in three of the final four holes. Ungermann’s experience of managing the mental side of golf shows her resilience and focus as she shakes off a bad hole and readies herself for the next one.  In the final foursome of the day, Annabelle Krieger ‘27 ran into a hot opponent as she too continues to develop all elements of her game in search of greater consistency.  Similarly, Charlotte Covill ‘25 would experience her first match as a Martlet as she worked to string together consistent shots.  This coach witnessed more than a few of Covill’s beautiful strikes which all signal plenty of promise ahead.  Next up, a rematch with Ethel Walkers at Hop
