General Summary
Westminster School has an exciting opportunity for a Carpenter and Utility Worker on its Simsbury, CT campus. Reporting to the Trades Manager, the Carpenter and Utility Worker is responsible for using carpentry skills to build and repair various structures and equipment throughout Westminster School which consists of 38 buildings. This is a 40-hour per week, 12-month position and reports directly to the Trades Manager. The schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm. Evenings, weekends, and special events will be required as needed.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with employees concerning work orders, prints, and sketches to understand the structure that needs to be built or repaired.
- Estimate equipment, tool, and material requirements for each job.
- Build, dismantle, and repair structures, walls, roofs, glass, and siding as assigned.
- Perform light carpentry including sheet rocking.
- Repair broken equipment such as chairs, desks, furniture, etc.
- Prepare and dismantle scaffolding as needed.
- Perform painting as needed.
- Operate all necessary tools to complete a job.
- Ensure tools and equipment are properly cleaned, stored, and maintained for optimum performance and safety.
- Maintain inventory of replacement parts and orders replacements.
- Comply with school and industry safety standards.
- Respond to emergency situations and resolve immediate safety concerns.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls when needed.
- Miscellaneous duties:
- Assist with special events set-up.
- Help with snow removal as needed.
- Unload cargo from trucks.
- Move furniture and supplies.
- Pick up parts and supplies off campus.
- Assist other tradespeople with projects.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Trades Manager to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the maintenance department.
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of formal carpenter apprenticeship program or equivalent training and experience required. Experience in a campus setting is strongly preferred.
- Thorough understanding of the correct and safe operation of all related tools and equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to draw accurate sketches to communicate the specifications for projects.
- Ability to take accurate measurements and calculations.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail is a must.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Must be able to work independently as well as with others.
- Must be positive and get along with visitors, vendors, students, and colleagues.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record required.
